Sisters around the nation are lacing up their gym shoes for the annual Relay for Life events in their areas. They are getting tents, sleeping bags, and their pj’s ready for these overnight events as they plan to raise money for the American Cancer Society (ACS).
Relay for Life events are overnight events hosted each year throughout April, May, and June to raise money for cancer awareness and cures. Relay for Life is an American Cancer Society event. ACS is the national philanthropy of Delta Xi Phi.
These events normally last for about 12 hours and are overnight. They start with a Survivor’s lap where cancer survivors walk a lap around the track or walking path, depending on where the event is hosted. Then, the other Relay participants join them on their second lap, officially opening the Relay event.
Activities at each Relay event can vary, but there are several that have become traditional, in addition to the Survivor’s and Opening Laps, Luminaria Ceremonies are held where bags are lit up with candles to remember and honor all loved ones who have been diagnosed with cancer whether they survived or are no longer with us.
Many of Delta Xi Phi sisters have set up their chapters as teams and are starting to fundraise for their Relay events. They need all the help they can get so they can help find a cure for cancer. Please show your support in their endeavors by clicking on the links to their Relay pages and donating. With your help, the ACS can make sure there are more birthdays to celebrate.
