This summer we held our National Convention in Baltimore, Maryland from June 25 – 27 at the Johns Hopkins University campus (home to our Lambda Chapter!). We had a phenomenal time and only wish MORE sisters could’ve been there!
Sisters arrived at all hours on Thursday; upon arrival they explored the campus, traveled around the city, and attended a step-and-stroll workshop led by South Regional Advisor Erien Watson. Sisterhood continued Thursday evening as sisters met each other for the first time, interacted with members from different regions, and generally bonded with one another!
Friday officially kicked off the first day of Convention. Registration went smoothly and all participants received their Delta Xi Phi swag for the weekend — a DXP tote bag sporting the crest, a folder with all the important worksheets and handouts, and a blue t-shirt that displayed the weekend theme — “DXP Goes Platinum: 20th Anniversary!” We kept the energy high by kicking off the morning with fun icebreakers led by Jeanette Pavlik, West Regional Advisor.
Friday morning and afternoon we heard from a variety of fantastic speakers, all of whom shared great ideas, tips, and lessons with our sisters that can be taken back and put into action at their chapters / campuses! Through out the day we had the opportunity to learn from:
- Joseph Colon, Assistant Director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs at JHU
- Topic: Multicultural Programming
- Demere Woolway, Director of LGBTQ Life at JHU
- Topic: Identity and Communication Styles
- Andrea Young, Assistant Director of Residence Life
- Topic: Living Your Letters and Perceptions
- Kirsten Bishop of JHU’s Center for Social Concern and Alpha Gamma Delta
- Topic: Risk Management
- Amanda Baker, Assistant Director at the JHU Career Center
- Topic: Career Development
Wrapping up Friday we recognized new and veteran alumnae in attendance through our annual alumnae ceremony. After that, sisters were free to explore the city and have a great time with fellow Xi Phi ladies! Alumnae dined in the Fell’s Point area at Bertha’s Mussels – delicious!
The National General meeting began bright and early at 9 AM on Saturday morning. Sisters came together and had the opportunity to vote on proposed amendments to the National Constitution and By-Laws as well as vote for a new National Board for the 2014-2016 term. For meeting minutes and to learn more about what occurred at the National General meeting, sisters can refer to the minutes located on the Sister Portal on the national website. We can announce one piece of news: Convention 2015 will be held in Atlanta, Georgia!
In addition to the National General meeting, chapter officer training was held and regions had a chance to share best practices, concerns, and issues through a ‘Regional Roundtable’ forum led by the Regional Advisors. Chapters also participated in one-on-one meetings with a national board member to further explore the chapter’s climate before the beginning of the school year.
Saturday night sisters attended the annual awards banquet where they and their individual associate/chapters were recognized for achievements in academics, community service, increasing multicultural awareness, sisterhood, and friendship over the past year. For a complete list of award winners, please refer to the Convention 2014 Award Winners press release.
Sunday morning Convention wrapped up through a quick Associate Member Education review to assist with recruitment for the upcoming year. Sisters also received departing gifts from the National Board – a few different types of bumper stickers – and chapters were able to sell any items they had brought to fundraise – such as cookbooks, shirts, hats, headbands, and more!
Overall the National Board hosted another successful Convention and sisters had a blast coming together to finally celebrate DXP’s 20th Anniversary! Thanks to all who came!
