Are You Being an Effective Communicator?

by Toni Johnson, Gamma alum

Are you being an effective communicator?

Within everything that you do in life communication is the key to the door. It can either help you build a bridge or it can help you destroy a bridge. It is vital that you are always trying your best to communicate well with others. Communication is especially important within the sorority. If a chapter has issues with communication the entire chapter is thrown off business wise and personally.
When you are practicing good communication skills the most important thing to remember is to listen. If you are not listening to the other person you are only concerned about your needs and your end goals. With good communication comes compromises and WIN/WIN solutions.

“Win/Win is a belief in the Third alternative. It’s not your way or my way; it’s a better way, a higher way(Covey 207).” *

“Win/Win is a frame of mind and heart that constantly seeks mutual benefit in a ll human interactions. Win/Win means that agreements or solutions are mutually beneficial, mutually satisfying (Covey 207).” *

1. Listen to understand
2. Listen to understand
3. Listen to understand
4. Be solution minded
5. Apply those solutions

*The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey
