Alpha sister, Syreeta Burnett, didn’t learn how to bake in school. She went to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign majoring in Architecture and Civil Engineering and then transferred to DePaul University where she earned her degree in Organizational Communications with a minor in Org. Psych. Burnett had a passion for baking food that turned into Ritzy Cakes, a bakery that specializes in wedding cakes, cupcakes, and other dessert foods.
“I started [Ritzy Cakes] originally because I have a love for making baked goods. It evolved into a passion that constantly motivates me each day to wake up and make something lovely for others to enjoy,” says Burnett, “I love to see and hear that people enjoy my food.”
Burnett started Ritzy Cakes officially in November 2008 as a home business. She bakes in a commercial kitchen that she rents. During the slower seasons, Burnett might have just herself and a delivery person working but during wedding season she employs another 2 people to keep up with the demand of wedding cakes.
“I mostly get asked to make wedding cakes, but my cupcakes are quite in demand, especially my Red Velvet Cupcakes! I also make Caribbean style desserts. These I learned from my mother growing up,” says Burnett.
Starting up the business took a lot of determination for Burnett. She had been able to do some small-scale events for family friends previously and decided to open up her own business.
“It really does take a desire to succeed regardless of governmental forms or the bumps in the road that one can encounter,” says Burnett.
Ritzy Cakes recently started shipping to those who would like to enjoy some tasty desserts outside of the delivery area.
